Interventional Procedure Track

Cheryl A. SchadCheryl A. Schad, BA Ed, CPC, ACS-RA, Owner, Schad Medical Management. Cheryl is a nationally recognized coding and reimbursement specialist and trainer. Her personal area of expertise is in interventional procedures and diagnostic radiology. She has more than 25 years of experience in health care.

Coding interventional procedures is not easy – the coding rules are more complex since they include surgery AND radiology guidelines and often differ from regular coding conventions because you can code the components. Let interventional coding guru Cheryl Schad give you real-life interventional coding examples, as well as a detailed overview of important billing rules to help you report interventional procedures accurately, so you can get the reimbursement you deserve:

  • Selective S&I:  You know all about "selective" catheter placement codes. But do you realize there are also selective supervision and interpretation codes – and do you understand when it is appropriate (and when it is not) to assign them?  Cheryl Schad will make sure you have all the fine points well in hand by the end of this informative session.
  • Imaging guidance:  CMS has provided very clear directives as to when you can separately report imaging guidance. There are also documentation requirements issued by both CMS and the AMA for separately reporting imaging guidance. You need to understand the difference between real-time guidance and imaging guidance to ensure you are coding these correctly. This session will provide in-depth information about coding imaging guidance and the associated documentation requirements.
  • Inclusive service determiners:  Do you know what "inclusive service determiners" (ISDs) are and how they impact “diagnostic” vascular studies performed with therapeutic procedures? ISDs were instituted by the National Correct Coding Initiative – and have a significant impact on the overall coding of interventional procedures. Find out the three key questions you need to ask so you avoid ISD denials at this session.
  • AV graft procedures:  More and more practices are performing AV graft interventions. But many don't realize that you can code and bill procedures performed beyond the graft, as well as those within the graft itself (like declotting). Cheryl will help you become aware of the dangers of using the same medical necessity for both procedures and explain ‘diagnostic’ vascular studies vs. surgical field assessments and, more importantly, what it means for your reimbursement.
Psssst! Stay for Linda Gates-Striby’s tip-packed cardiology session and here how she is tackling code changes and critical issues for 2008.
